What Cause ACNE?
We know that the sebaceous glands continue to produce sebum. For various reasons, the dead skin cells of stratum corneum can lead to blockage of hair follicles, The sebum gets trapped on the way out, and micro-organisms will breed in the hair follicle, further results in inflammation, and swelling phenomena, and directly causes some follicles to form acne. For more information, watch video: "Causes of Acne", or read at: Mayo Clinic about causes of acne.

Obviously, endocrine disorders, poor diet, lack of sleep, work and life stress, among other factors will affect the secretion of sebum and the process of sloughing away of dead skin cells of stratum corneum. The inability of sloughing away of dead skin cells also results in skin with dull appearance, lack of luster, and drying problem.
Types of ACNE
Blackheads:
Due to large pore size, clogged hair follicles with oil and dead skin cells expose to the air and oxidation occured,  Acne turns to black, we call blackheads.
Whiteheads:
If the pore size is small, it will have less exposure to the air, therefore acne can maintain its original color, namely whiteheads, we call whiteheads.
Boils:
Boils can be evolved from blackheads or whiteheads after inflammation. We see the white pus which is the direct result of white blood cells fighting with bacteria.
Cryts:
Just like Boils, Cyst is caused by the same mechanism. But it is relatively deep under skin after inflammation. What we see is a large protrusion of acne.

Non prescription drugs, a little more than a mild Vitamin A acid, acts as a keratolytic agent, and reduce oil secretion. Will convert into Vitamin A acid after absorbed by the body .
α-hydroxyl acid
Water soluble active ingredients, can promote skin metabolism, Strong skin irritation .
Salicylic acid (BHA)
Lipophilic active ingredient, mild, low irritation, can penetrate into the pores. Better than the α-hydroxyl acid, acts as a keratolytic agent, bactericidal without bacteria resistance issue.
Brief Analysis of Common Anti-Acne Ingredients
Benefits of Salicylic Acid in Treatment of ACNE
Stories About Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a natural product. It can be found in many plants, such as willow bark. It is also called "anti-inflammatory drugs." for plants. When plants are infected by viruses, or bacteria, the salicylic acid levels are significantly increased in the necrotic lesion site of infection to prevent the spread of other non-infected parts of the plants, In addition, the salicylic acid levels in other non-infected parts of the plants are also increased, so that it can generate pathogens for infection resistantance.

Salicylic acid is an excellent keratolytic agent with ability for opening up pores, excellent safety profile, less skin irritation than AHA and benzoyl peroxide, and the key ingredient for many skin care products. In addition, the use of salicylic acid in treating skin pigmentation, fine wrinkles, constricting pores, making skin looks smooth and fresh and preventing acne is well known. In addition, it can improve skin aging caused by sun burn.

Medically, salicylic acid and its derivatives is known for their ability to ease analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatism, arthritis, and anti-thrombotic, and can be used to treat various chronic skin diseases. Recent medical research shows that salicylic acid and its derivatives play an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Most recently, British Researchers found that salicylic acid level in the blood of vegetarian is very high that is almost equivalent to patients who taking low dosage aspirin. The human body can produce its own salicylic acid. Many scientists now believe that "Salicylic acid that produced biologically plays an important broad defense role not only for plants but also for animals, it is the animal's own bio-regulators."

In summary, salicylic acid is not only good for the beauty of skin! but also has more benefits to human body!
Stories About Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a natural ingredient, and has a long history of use (ancient Greece, Egypt, ancient China).
Salicylic acid works as a keratolytic agent by causing the cells of the epidermis to shed more readily, thus preventing the clogging of hair follicle and the production of acne.
Salicylic acid is lipophilic, and has a significantly better efficacy than α-hydroxyl acid in opening up clogged pores and neutralizing bacteria within, preventing pores from clogging up again by constricting pore diameter, and allowing room for new cell growth.
Salicylic acid does not have bacteria resistance issues.
Salicylic acid and its derivatives is well known for treating dandruff, acne, skin wrinkling, skin pigmentation, warts, freckles, or other skin-related problems in the preparation of dermatologic and cosmetic formulations.
Recent study found that: salicylic acid is not only good to the skin, but also has more benefits to the body (to prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer).
Challenges for Formulating with Salicylic Acid
Anti-acne products on the market today are general presented in the form of emulsion, alcoholic gel or alcoholic solution. However, most of the anti-acne products on the market have less than 2% salicylic acid in the formulation, although the U.S. FDA allows to use upto 2% salicylic acid for leave-on products in cosmetics. This is largely due to the insolubility of salicylic acid in water at room temperature. Typical problems which occurs when using salicylic acid in making dermatologic and cosmetic products are that the salicylic acid tends to crystallize out within various compositions, which significantly reduces the bioavailability of salicylic acid for treating or preventing the skin problems. Further, salicylic acid forms crystals on standing and precipitate out within the solution, which are unpleasant with regard to texture and appearance from the consumer's viewpoint. In general, there are stability issues with emulsion containing salicylic acid, To formulate an emulsion with 2% salicylic acid is a challenging task even for an experienced formulation Chemist!

For the purpose of dissolution of salicylic acid, they typically had to use more than 30% alcohol in formulation. It is well known that formula that contains 2% salicylic acid will have a pH value much lower than 3.0. It is most likely to cause skin burning sensation, redness and other skin reactions when the pH is below 3.0 with leave-on cosmetic product. Although some of the preparations use 2% salicylic acid within the formulation, they also contain pH balancer to neutralize salicylic acid and to adjust pH vaule above 3.0 . On the other hand, during the application, with the rapid evaporation of alcohol, salicylic acid dissolved in the formula will re-crystallize out quickly to form a small micro crystalline particles, which in turns makes it difficulty for skin to absorb, not only greatly reduce the product efficacy, but also prone to dry skin and skin irritation.

Anti-acne products with controlled or sustained release of 2% salicylic acid can readily solve the skin irritation issues. Although product still has pH value less than 3.0, the salicylic acid is delivered to the skin through controlled or sustained release in a period of time, thus, greatly reduce skin irritation due to low pH value, making the anti-acne products to milder, safer and more effective! At this time, there is no sustained and controlled release anti-acne products in the market.
Now we understand the cause of acne. If you are suffering with acne, what can you do about acne ?

The causes of acne is due to the oil secretion and the dead skin cells blocked the hair follicle , and subsequent bacterial infection. To treat the acne, you need not only to kill the bacteria, but also to slough away of dead skin cells. That is "not only the symptoms! But also its roots!"

The Lipophilic anti-acne agents are presented uniformly at the molecular level in the hydrogel delivery system. Unlike other traditional anti-acne products, Broda anti-acne intelliGel is developed with unique breakthrough patent pending IntelliGel technology without using harsh solvents, such as ethyl alcohol, for solubilizing 2% salicylic acid, and making the product safer, milder and more effective. At the same time, it avoids possible skin irritation, dryness and sensitization caused by the presence of large amount of ethyl alcohol, or other harsh chemicals like benzoyl peroxide, in the product formulation.

The evaporation of alcohol makes skin drying, and prone to the sensitive and fragile skin with the damage of skin balance. Long-term use will cause skin drying, rough, and risk of earlier keratosis. Of course, for the purpose of solubilizing active ingredients, the cosmetic products containing less than 5% of alcohol is acceptable.

I am so glad I tried it!
"Since I have very sensitive skin, I always check the ingredients of any facial products before I make a purchase. I was so surprised to find that Broda Anti-acne IntelliGel™ does not contain any alcohol. Every other acne medication I've used has always had alcohol listed as a main ingredient. I decided to give it a try and wow! I am so glad I tried it! It works wonders on my skin, and clears up my pimples so fast without making my skin feel dry."
Jackie Cahill – Bridgewater, NJ, USA
It works amazingly without forming white blotches on my skin.
"Not only does this Anti-acne IntelliGel™ works amazingly to clear up my acne but since it's clear, unlike other acne products that are milky white, I can use it in the morning under my makeup without worrying about it drying up and forming white blotches on my skin."
Ashley Chau – New York, NY, USA
Broda Results
"My beautiful 16 year old daughter has tried EVERYTHING to get rid of her acne - prescription creams and pills. over-the-counter products, natural remedies, and we have gone to two dermatologists. We finally came across Broda online and decided to try it. The results have been really impressive in just a few weeks!! Her acne is much less red and pronounced, less bumpy and her skin seems to actually be healing a bit. She has gone from not wanting to look people in the face because she felt they were just looking at her acne, to waking up smiling everyday. We will definitely be continuing to use Broda Skincare!!"
Kevin E. Sneeden, Valley Cottage, NY, USA
Jason Hammond – Denver, CO, USA
Better results than medication!
"For years I have used prescription medications to treat my acne. After two weeks of using Broda, my skin was clearer than it ever was while on medication. The redness and irritation went away so quickly. I have since stopped taking medication and use Broda exclusively to treat my acne."
It is milder on the skin and does not cause any irritation.
"I tried this product for a two weeks period of time (applying it every day in the morning and at night) and found that my acne improved significantly. The results are quick as well, the first morning after I applied the gel I could see the improvements. It reduced in size and redness; the gel also helped to lessen the outbreak of new acne. What makes this different from other anti-acne products that I've used in the past is that it is milder on the skin and does not cause any irritation. It is probably the most effective product that I have tried and I would definitely recommend it to others.""I tried this product for a two weeks period of time (applying it every day in the morning and at night) and found that my acne improved significantly.
